Diagnosing The Biggest Problems On My Volvo V70R Didn't Go As Planned...

Where there's smoke there's fire... Sometimes.

Today I diagnose the biggest problems with my cheap Volvo V70R. It smokes when I drive it hard, and the computers are VERY mad.

I perform the famous "glove test" on the car, and then Jacob and I tear into the interior and get the amplifier, yaw sensor, and CEM out to see what we are dealing with.

Glove test all of your cars!

The Volvo AC compressor. It should not " Click " on and of that freaqently. My friend looked at my MK1 V70 compressor with a flashlight, and just went. " Yeah, that needs a shim washer " #Pro Admittedly, the AC system had been leaking for a long time. So we had to allso change a lot of gaskets on the AC line. just FYI... but the frequent cycling of the compressor is a sign...

Oh no, that's nowhere near as bad as it can be. We had an 8th gen civic that would blow massive amount of compressed air out of the oil fill cap. Like if you removed the cap while the engine was running it would blow the cap off the engine and change the tone of the engine. Later the underside of the cap had the typical blown head gasket symptoms but the car ran fine, until the transmission failed and we junked it.

IMO I wouldn't even worry about the turbo until you do a full PCV service. My dad's '04 R was burning a quart every 700 miles at 200k. I did the PCV and that number jumped to about 3k/quart, which is normal.

I owned an 07 V70R, same blue color, but with the Gobi tan interior. Was a great car…until it wasn’t. It survived getting rear ended by an F150, which wasn’t terrible, but the $12k of damage when I was t-boned by a Chevy pickup really was the beginning of the end for it. Nursed it for another 10k miles, but when the angle gear blew at 235k miles, I just wasn’t willing to put any more time or money into it. Also had the computer serviced twice, same place your wagon had its computer done at.

Fun fact, as a volvo mecanic myslef, the reson we dont say what the problem is cus often when ay car person comes in they have 0 clue of what they are talking about and the mecanic needs to look at it cus it can be 10000 things. (u do know what u r talking about tho) but also if the mecainc whould for exampel say its the head gasket and u fix it and turns out that was not the problem, you will tell your frineds that the mecanics at that shop is bad and so on..

The pcv system kind of needs a little presure but okay ... Otherwise you would suck up air into the engine/crankcase ... how is that supposed to happen ? Sure the turbo should pull it but even new engines dont suck in air through the oilcap. Just compare the opening of the oilcap with the diameter of the pcv hose ... imagine how much vacuum there has to be in order to suck the crankcase into a vacuum. Also every turbo lives by the fact to be able to breave free !

Pcv box and hoses. I highly recommend dropping the oil pan and replacing it. Replacing the oil lines surrounding turbo. If the R has the aw55-50 tranny. I highly recommend new b-4 servo cap. New shift solenoid's and valves on the shift body. And then I know this is an opinion of mine. But these engines run HOT with the oil and tranny coolers with the intercooler all packed in the front. Oil goes bad in 1500-2500 miles. A high-quality dual fan that you can control with a switch would be perfect for keeping the engine cool.

T5 and similar volvos are known for MAJOR water leaks from the sunroof. the hoses in the A pillars shrink and pull off and water pools under the driver floor board and gets all the electronics wet. these volvos are also known to LEAK OIL from the pulley seals near the timing chain so you need to do both and as stated earlier may have been caused by a stuck PCV valve tank you can replace the whole thing or an aftermarket company makes gaskets to rebuild the PCV which I think IPD or FCPeuro, one of them recently started selling.

Heyya!😃 Before you send anything off I would use a toothbrush and contact cleaner to clean the circuit boards, often times that will fix things. The moisture creates its own tracks so to speak, but because it’s mostly equivalent to a resistor, unless the tracks or components are rotted through removing this will bring it back to life.......I think your audio amp might be too far gone, but the rest would be worth a try. So I'm pretty sure that white powder is actually aluminum oxide - what it looks like when (usually cast) aluminum "rusts". See any small engine rescue channel like Machinery Restorer for lots more of it - happens to riding mower engines that get left outside for years. Probably from the cast case of the amp. I do think it's just surface rust though. If it has sitting water, you'd smell it. Water barely into the cabin of my old car called for a complete tear out and shampoo of the whole body carpet on the insurance's dime. Unfortunately it was only to be for a few more months until a massive flood completely submerged it 😥

Sorry to bring bad news but I'm prepared to bet money that you have head gasket issues. When I bought my Volvo P2 it had a clogged PCV valve which creates a pressure inside the crankcase. This pressure then blows the head gasket and oil and/or coolant gets into the cylinders. I suggest you do the chemical test for head gasket leaks.

not sure if water really destroys the electronics, of course it can do, but usually I saw some pretty crap that still ran. Make sure you clean it properly so no connections are made over the dried water marks, maybe replace the parts on there. Does not look like there is much in it that could break, a transformer never breacs (basically, very robust), the capacitors are old and age anyway (so better to replace them, anyway) and if the board is clean and the chips are okay, it could work. If the chips or anything is bad, you basically can't replace them (SMD soldering, hard to find parts and hard to find the cause of the error).
