Replacing The Computer On My Volvo V70R Resulted In CATASTROPHIC Electrical Failure... Now What??

For the record, the amplifier didn't work either....

Welcome back everyone! Today I finish up the PCV install on my Volvo V70R, as well as install the new yaw sensor, radio amplifier, and CEM. Everything was going so well... Until it wasn't. Now I'm not sure what to do. Let me know in the comments what you would do in my shoes!

There's also a brief cameo from @WatchJRGo so go follow him if you haven't already!

In the video at 13:03 when you turn the ignition on, the dash is lighting up and turning off then lighting up. As soon as I saw that I knew something was wrong with your system. It's likely the CPU wasn't programmed correctly for your year which is why they thought the wiper motors weren't correct. Has the computer been replaced before? Or is that for sure the original? You know the car was running well before, so you have good bones if you will. Work on diagnosing the electrical and you'll have a solid runner. I say keep at it!

Well that seems like $600 well spent 😒 NOT!!!!! No smoke before it was sent away and smoke after it comes back. If it can only be plugged back in one way then really only leaves the repairer to see what they balls'd up.

If your instrument cluster isn't working your not going to have: a windows won't open,b the ac wont work either.c the alarm system won't work, the courtsey lights won't work. And you might get po 2111 half engine power. D no gages clock can run continued to run forward or backward and never stop. All caused by instrument cluster . e no turn signals on inside of outside of car. Also caused by cluster . besure to get exact same cluster no. And year. Or you will have problems. Smell inside of cluster for burn't innards.you cannot use any other gage no. Even if it has same plug don't try it.

As an advice I can tell you stay away from Volvo dealers when you have Volvo. Your car will feel a lot better and so will be your wallet if you will keep away your precious v70r away from dealers. There are people who know a lot more and can do things a lot better than dealers

If you haven't, be sure to re-tighten the throttle body after the car's warm (run the car for 20 mins (when it runs properly) then re tighten). After tightening, hit max boost to make sure it won't pop off. I managed to pop the duct off with just a wee bit of boost the day after I replaced the PCV and had to limp home for 30 minutes at 30mph max :D

In my whole career as technician I don’t remember that I replaced an ECM in a Volvo not even once. In other words I never experienced an ECM failure. 2. Before you go wild and spend money on expensive repairs always check the wires and the contacts. 90% of the faults are laying there. Good luck

Given the nearly slanderously bad/incorrect information on the other videos of yours that I've had the displeasure of viewing, perhaps you should leave car repairs to people that know what they're doing. Hell, just leave the entire subject of cars alone.

When in doubt, get the car wizard, as he is military and part of their training is to go through a checklist of what the problems could be, and with the thing having a flooded floor, its possible the grounds have been rusted and causing shorts and irregular voltage amounts to the electronics, and he could have parts that you would otherwise have to order for it in stock given the nature of his business. like I know its cheating but, its the electronics and getting those to work are kinda key here.

Got one used. (volvo) To cheep to pass up ! Forget it!!! Just throw your money, energy, time and sanity off the same cliff. NO GROUP OF HUMANS COULD POSSIBLY HAVE CREATED SUCH QUICKSAND BY ACCEDENT. The deception of safety, non rusty body, and an engine with a long life are all TRAPS to lure you in . People refuse to pass on these severly overengined money pits, and no one believes that even the factory cannot fix the major, much less the dozens- no more than that of constant faiures. Dealers can only quote ungodly repairs to make you buy something else. Before you buy- ask a VOLVO dealer if his shop CAN- CAN- repair its transmission- at ANY price. Now ask for an estimate of $$. Have you priced a 1960's AIRCOOLED VW BEATLE LATELY? They may be the only way to go! Me? I'm the Silver V70 sitting (again) along I 81 Near Winchester, Va. Is this the time to do a Hoovie and yell "Weezard"? I can't help but notice that you seem to do things backwards. Normally the first step is to get a proper diagnosis of the problems and then the second step is to start repairing them. You jumped straight to step two and as a popular NLid diagnostician would call it "started firing the parts cannon at it" which will only cost a lot of money and probably won't fix the real issue(s).

Had similar issues with my CEM in my V70R (2007). Sent it to Xemodex twice, and it did go back to running ok. The electrical system is so picky in these things. Just before I scrapped mine, the wiring in the engine was shorting, and you can’t buy new wiring for it, but what was the end of the wagon was the angle gear crapping out. I’d recommend dumping yours, or make it a real project and find some other drivetrain to put in it - maybe a Subaru 2.5 turbo?

Got a 2004 S80. Most sensitive electrial electrical system I've ever seen. If you've been changing computers and and the main one does'nt recognise it you may well have to get it reprogrammed. On mine the battery being low gave me erroneous trouble lights. When I got mine, a lot of strange stuff went away as I repaired minor stuff that would appear to be unrelated. You can have two lights that work but are from diffrent companies. The car thinks there's a light out because they read diffrent resistance. It's been a great car, been easy to maintain, but it will throw you for a loop somtimes. I would be tempted to check the ignition switch.

Hello there. I have been watching your videos on the Volvo V70R. I came across a site about the CEM issues on P2 Volvos and I think maybe the issue in the past with your Volvo is that the CEM may have overheated or had a heating issue. It is a notorious problem. Here is a link to the site: www.matthewsvolvosite.com/decrease-chances-cem-dim-failure-fan/. I hope you finally fix your Volvo V70R because I am looking forward to seeing your V70R Estate drive on the road properly! Hello from Great Britain.

A few years ago, I had a 2007 C70 T5 with a very similar issue. I was on a road trip from NC to CA. After fueling up somewhere in Nevada, the car started doing strange things. First, the engine cut off entirely while I was driving on the highway, lost power steering and all the gauges. I pulled over and tried to restart it, only the wipers turned on without me turning the wiper stock. The cluster lit up like a Christmas tree. Then I unplugged the battery for 5 min, then restarted it, it started, but I couldn't roll down all windows, there were no gauges, and the radio doesn't work either. I drove to San Diego like this then parked it overnight, the next day everything was fine. I used it for the entire trip from CA to WA, then back to NC. On my way back home, the same thing happened again in IL, this time the car simply won't start. Got it towed to a local Volvo dealer, the guy knocked the alternator with a stick, which it worked. After getting back to NC, I replaced the PCV, which it needs replacement before my CA trip, nothing else, and the car became normal again. That was the strangest thing I have ever experienced.
